Biometric AIDC: Fingerprint and Iris Identification

Fingerprint, iris, and facial recognition systems form a distinct branch of automatic identification technology: instead of identifying an object through an attached tag or code, biometric AIDC identifies a person directly through a physical characteristic that cannot be lent, lost, or easily forged.

How Biometric Identification Differs from Object AIDC

Barcode and RFID identify whatever the tag is attached to — a box, a pallet, a badge. If the badge is handed to someone else, the system has no way to know the identity presented isn't the authorized person. Biometric identification instead reads an inherent physical trait, so the credential and the person are, by definition, the same thing, closing a security gap that credential-based systems cannot fully address on their own.

Where Warehouses and Logistics Use Biometrics
  • Time and attendance clock-in, replacing swipe cards that can be shared between employees ("buddy punching")
  • Access control to restricted zones — high-security storage, controlled substances, cold storage with limited entry
  • Operator authentication on forklifts or other powered equipment, ensuring only certified operators can start a vehicle
  • Signing off quality or safety checkpoints where accountability for who performed the check matters

Accuracy and Environmental Challenges

Fingerprint readers can struggle with workers wearing gloves, hands soiled with grease or dust, or dry skin common in cold storage environments — all realistic conditions in a warehouse that a clean office deployment would not face. Facial recognition systems can be affected by high dust levels, inconsistent lighting on a warehouse floor, or personal protective equipment like safety glasses and masks that partially obscure the face. Iris scanning is generally more resistant to surface contamination than fingerprint but requires closer, more deliberate positioning, similar in that respect to how NFC requires closer contact than UHF RFID.

Privacy and Regulatory Considerations

Biometric data is treated as sensitive personal data under most data protection frameworks, generally requiring explicit employee consent, clear retention and deletion policies, and stronger security controls around storage than a badge number or employee ID would require. Organizations deploying biometric AIDC typically need a documented legal basis and a defined process for handling data subject requests, which barcode- or card-based identification does not trigger in the same way.

Where Biometrics Complement Rather Than Replace Other AIDC

Biometrics answer "who is this person" but do not identify objects, so they are typically layered alongside barcode or RFID systems rather than replacing them: a worker badges or scans an RFID credential to identify their role or authorization level, and a fingerprint or facial scan confirms that the credential belongs to the person presenting it, combining object-level and person-level identification in a single workflow.
