This yard-level visibility is most valuable when it feeds directly into the transportation planning or TMS function responsible for building backhaul loads. Rather than the planner working from a stale trailer list, real-time yard status lets them match an actual, physically available trailer and tractor pair to a backhaul opportunity as soon as one becomes viable, rather than discovering after the fact that the assigned trailer was still occupied elsewhere.

Reducing Deadhead Through Yard-Level Alerts

Setting an aging threshold — flagging any private fleet trailer sitting empty in the yard beyond a defined number of hours without an assigned load — gives the transportation team an actionable trigger rather than relying on someone noticing the trailer during a routine check. Over time, tracking how often this threshold is breached highlights whether backhaul planning is systematically leaving capacity idle.

Mixed Fleet Yard Reporting

Because a facility's yard commonly hosts both private fleet and for-hire carrier trailers side by side, reporting should distinguish between the two populations rather than blending them into a single dwell-time average.
