An effective integration does more than store the ASN as a reference document. It should actively drive yard decisions:

  • Auto-suggesting a dock or yard slot based on expected commodity and outbound demand
  • Pre-populating the gate check-in screen so guards confirm rather than re-key data
  • Triggering quantity or item discrepancy alerts as soon as receiving counts diverge from the ASN
  • Feeding expected arrival windows into dock schedule conflict checks before the trailer is even close

Not every supplier sends a timely or complete ASN. The YMS needs a graceful fallback path — treating trailers without matching ASN data as a distinct category that triggers manual data entry at the gate rather than blocking check-in entirely. Tracking ASN compliance by supplier over time also becomes a useful lever in vendor performance conversations.

EDI-driven yard visibility is most valuable when it doesn't stop at the gate.
