Large yards with hundreds of trailer positions face a persistent problem: physically walking or driving the yard to verify what's actually parked where is slow, and the resulting inventory is stale the moment it's collected. Drone-based aerial yard checks, feeding data into a Yard Management System, offer a faster way to reconcile the system's record against physical reality.

Even yards with disciplined data entry accumulate drift over time — a trailer moved by hand during a shift change without a corresponding system update, a spotter move logged against the wrong position, a trailer that arrived through an unattended gate and was never formally checked in. How Drone-Based Checks Work

A drone flying a programmed route over the yard captures images or video of every parking row, and image recognition software reads visible trailer numbers, container codes, or license plates from the footage. That data is compared automatically against the YMS's expected trailer-to-position map, surfacing:

  • Trailers in the wrong recorded position
  • Trailers physically present but missing from the system entirely
  • Positions marked occupied in the system but empty in reality

Frequency and Operational Fit

Drone-based checks make the most sense for large yards where a full manual walk is genuinely burdensome, and for facilities that want more frequent reconciliation than staffing allows — a nightly or twice-daily automated flight rather than a weekly manual count. Smaller yards may find the manual process sufficiently fast that the added complexity of drone operations isn't worth it.

Regulatory and Safety Considerations

Operating drones commercially typically requires compliance with local aviation authority rules, including pilot certification and flight restrictions near certain facility types. Programmed, repeatable routes flown at low altitude over a controlled private yard generally present a manageable compliance path, but this needs to be confirmed against local regulations before deployment rather than assumed.
