Job-Site Delivery Constraints

Unlike a warehouse or store that can absorb early or late deliveries, a construction site has a build sequence: framing cannot start before structural steel arrives, and steel erection cannot proceed if the crane path is blocked by a concrete delivery. Construction logistics planners therefore work backward from the site schedule to set delivery windows, often coordinating multiple suppliers to arrive in a specific order on a specific day, a practice sometimes called just-in-time site delivery.

Handling Heavy and Oversized Loads

Steel beams, precast panels, and large mechanical equipment require flatbed or specialized trailers, crane offloading coordinated with the delivery window, and route surveys for oversize loads through urban areas. Damage risk is higher than in general freight because materials are frequently handled multiple times — from factory to yard to truck to crane to final position — and any single mishandling event can compromise a structural component.

Managing Waste and Reverse Flows

Construction logistics also runs in reverse: packaging waste, offcuts, excess material, and demolition debris must be removed from the site on a schedule that does not conflict with inbound deliveries. Many contractors now separate waste streams (wood, metal, concrete, general debris) at the point of removal to support recycling requirements, which adds a sorting and multi-stream collection layer to what would otherwise be simple debris hauling.
