Dedicated vs. Common Carriage Contracts
Choosing between dedicated and common carriage — and the range of contract structures in between — is one of the most consequential decisions a shipper makes, determining whether transport capacity is owned outright, guaranteed by contract, or purchased on the open market as needed.
Common carriage refers to transport capacity purchased as needed from carriers serving the general market, with no long-term exclusivity or guaranteed capacity commitment on either side. This model offers maximum flexibility and lets a shipper avoid fixed costs during low-volume periods, but it also means capacity and pricing are subject to market conditions — during a capacity crunch, a shipper relying purely on common carriage may struggle to secure trucks at any price.
Dedicated carriage contracts commit a specific set of vehicles, drivers, or equipment exclusively to one shipper's freight, usually for a fixed term, in exchange for a committed volume or minimum payment regardless of actual usage. This trades cost efficiency for reliability: a shipper pays for capacity whether or not it is fully utilized every day, but gains predictable service levels, driver familiarity with specific delivery locations, and priority during regional capacity shortages.
Between pure spot-market common carriage and fully dedicated fleets sits contract carriage: a shipper commits to a projected volume with a specific carrier at agreed rates for a fixed period, without owning or exclusively reserving specific vehicles. This structure gives more price and capacity certainty than the spot market while retaining more flexibility than a dedicated fleet, and it is the most common arrangement for mid-volume shippers who need reliability but cannot justify a fully dedicated operation.

Most mature shippers use a blended approach: dedicated or contract carriage for core, predictable lanes that represent the bulk of volume, with common carriage reserved as overflow capacity for demand spikes or as backup when a contracted carrier cannot cover a load. This hybrid model captures the cost and reliability benefits of committed capacity for the base load while retaining market flexibility for the variable portion of demand.
