Pick-to-Light and Put-to-Light Systems Explained

Pick-to-light and put-to-light are among the most cost-effective automation technologies available to warehouses: simple light-and-button modules mounted at storage locations that guide workers through picking or putaway with minimal training and near-zero error rates, without requiring any robotics.

How the Technology Works

Each storage location is fitted with a small display module containing a light indicator, a digit display, and a confirmation button. When an order requires an item from that location, the light illuminates and the display shows the quantity needed. The worker retrieves the quantity, presses the button to confirm, and the system automatically moves to the next required location. Put-to-light works in reverse: incoming items are distributed to multiple order totes or store replenishment bins simultaneously, with lights indicating quantity for each destination.

Where It Fits Best

Pick-to-light is best suited to zones with stable, high-frequency SKU locations — fast movers in a fixed shelving or flow-rack area — rather than a full warehouse of slow-moving, constantly changing inventory. It is frequently used at goods-to-person pick stations, order consolidation areas, and kitting operations where the same set of bins is accessed repeatedly throughout a shift.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

The technology requires wiring or wireless infrastructure to every enabled location, and relocating SKUs means physically relocating or reprogramming modules, so it fits best in zones with relatively stable slotting. It also does not perform the physical movement itself — a person still walks to and reaches into the location — so it complements rather than replaces goods-to-person automation for reducing travel time.
