Control Tower Visibility Platforms
A control tower sits above individual TMS instances and carrier systems to give a single, consolidated view of freight movement across an entire network — often spanning multiple business units, regions, or even multiple TMS platforms inherited through acquisitions.
Many large shippers operate more than one TMS, whether due to regional deployments, acquired companies running different systems, or different modes (ocean, air, truck) each managed in a separate platform. A control tower does not replace these systems; it aggregates their data into a unified visibility and exception-management layer, so a transportation leader can see the full picture of what is moving, what is delayed, and where intervention is needed without logging into five different systems.

Basic shipment tracking answers "where is this one shipment." A control tower answers "what across my entire network needs my attention right now," which is a fundamentally different question requiring aggregation, normalization, and prioritization logic that a single-instance TMS is not designed to provide across systems it does not own.
A control tower is as much an organizational commitment as a technology one. It typically requires a dedicated team monitoring the aggregated view and empowered to intervene across regions or business units — otherwise the additional visibility does not translate into faster resolution. Shippers that deploy control tower technology without assigning clear ownership for acting on its alerts often end up with a more detailed dashboard but the same response times as before.
Because a control tower depends entirely on data fed from underlying systems, its usefulness is capped by the weakest data source in the network. A regional TMS with poor tracking data integrity or a carrier that reports status inconsistently will create blind spots in the control tower view regardless of how sophisticated the aggregation layer is, making data standardization an ongoing prerequisite rather than a one-time setup task.
