TMS for Chemical and Hazmat Placarding Compliance
Chemical and hazmat placarding compliance requires that vehicles carrying hazardous materials display the correct warning placards for the specific hazard class being transported, determined by regulatory classification rules rather than shipper preference. A TMS handling hazmat freight needs to derive placarding requirements automatically from shipment data rather than leaving the determination to manual lookup at dispatch time.
Placarding requirements depend on the hazard class, packing group, and quantity being shipped, and the required placard can change based on quantity thresholds — a shipment below a certain quantity may not require placarding at all, while the same material above the threshold does. Getting this wrong is both a safety issue and a regulatory violation, and manual determination at the dock is exactly the point in the process where errors are most likely under time pressure.
The TMS should maintain a hazard classification reference (UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class, packing group) linked to each hazmat-flagged product, and calculate the applicable placard requirement automatically from the combination of hazard class and total quantity on the vehicle, including combined quantities when multiple hazmat shipments are co-loaded on the same trailer.

The TMS should verify driver hazmat endorsement status before tendering a hazmat load, the same way it should verify vehicle placard compliance, since a compliant placard on a truck driven by an unqualified driver is still a violation.
Certain hazard classes cannot be transported together on the same vehicle due to reaction risk, and segregation tables specify minimum separation or outright prohibition for incompatible combinations. Load-building logic in the TMS should check these segregation rules automatically before allowing a hazmat co-load to be finalized, rather than relying on a dispatcher's manual knowledge of segregation tables that are dense and easy to misapply under time pressure.
Many jurisdictions restrict hazmat routes through tunnels, densely populated areas, or over certain bridges. The TMS should treat these restrictions the same way it treats oversized-load route restrictions — as hard routing constraints tied to the vehicle's classified cargo, not general preferences the routing engine can override for efficiency.
