WMS Hazardous Goods Segregation Rules
Storing chemicals, aerosols, batteries, and other regulated dangerous goods alongside general merchandise requires a WMS to enforce segregation rules that have nothing to do with picking efficiency and everything to do with preventing a fire, spill, or reaction. This is a narrower, more specific problem than general hazmat storage: the focus here is how incompatible dangerous-goods classes interact within the same facility.
Dangerous goods are classified into compatibility groups, oxidizers, flammables, corrosives, and so on, where certain combinations must never be stored in close proximity due to reaction or fire-propagation risk. The WMS needs a compatibility matrix attached to the item master, and putaway logic that actively blocks assigning an incompatible item to a location too close to a conflicting class, rather than relying on staff memory of the rules.
Many dangerous-goods regulations set maximum permitted quantities of a hazard class per storage zone or building section, beyond which additional fire suppression, ventilation, or containment measures become legally required. The WMS should track cumulative on-hand quantity by hazard class per zone in real time and block a putaway or receipt that would push a zone over its permitted threshold, rather than relying on a periodic manual audit to catch the overage after the fact.
Beyond dangerous-goods-to-dangerous-goods conflicts, many hazardous materials must also be kept away from food, pharmaceuticals, or other sensitive general merchandise due to contamination or odor-transfer risk. This creates a second, cross-category segregation rule set that the WMS needs to enforce alongside the hazard-class compatibility matrix, since a technically hazmat-compliant placement can still violate food-safety adjacency requirements.
In an emergency, first responders need to know quickly what hazardous materials are present, in what quantity, and where. The WMS should be able to produce a real-time hazard-class inventory report by zone, ideally exportable in a format usable by the local fire department or emergency services, since this data is far more valuable minutes before an incident than reconstructed after one.
