ITF-14: The Carton and Case Barcode

ITF-14 does not change that underlying bar/space encoding at all — it is a specific GS1-defined application of Interleaved 2 of 5 with a fixed data length (always exactly 14 digits), a fixed structure (a GS1 packaging-indicator digit followed by a GTIN-13 without its own check digit, plus a newly calculated check digit for the full 14-digit string), and a mandatory printed frame called bearer bars surrounding the entire symbol. Cartons and cases are typically printed by lower-resolution industrial printing processes than retail item labels, and they are scanned by warehouse and dock equipment that may approach the barcode from imperfect angles or under less controlled lighting than a retail point-of-sale scanner. ITF-14 mandates thick horizontal bars above and below the code (and, in some print specifications, vertical bars on the sides forming a complete rectangular frame) specifically to prevent partial or angled scans from misreading a truncated portion of the symbol as a complete, valid barcode. This bearer bar frame is not optional decoration — it is a defined part of the ITF-14 specification precisely because case-level printing conditions are harsher than retail shelf conditions.
- Digit 1 (leftmost): the GS1 Packaging Indicator, a value from 0-8 indicating the packaging level (0 typically used when the GTIN-14 simply carries a variable-measure item, 1-8 indicating case, carton, or pallet packaging levels containing a fixed quantity of the base retail unit).

ITF-14 is the near-universal standard for identifying a case, carton, or pallet load containing a defined quantity of a base retail item as it moves through distribution centers, cross-docks, and receiving docks — printed on the outside of shipping cartons so warehouse scanners can identify the contents without opening the case. Because ITF-14 is typically printed directly onto corrugated cardboard using flexographic printing — a lower-resolution process than thermal or laser printing on smooth labels — achievable print quality is generally lower, and the standard's minimum bar width and quiet zone requirements are correspondingly more generous than retail-level EAN/UPC barcodes to compensate. Warehouse and logistics scanning equipment should be selected and configured with this print environment in mind, since a fixed decode setting tuned for crisp retail labels may struggle with the ink spread typical of cardboard printing.
