GS1 DataBar: The Modern Retail Barcode

GS1 DataBar is the current GS1-branded family of compact linear and stacked symbologies designed to encode full GS1 Application Identifiers — including GTIN, batch, weight, and expiry — on packages too small for a traditional EAN/UPC barcode. It is the everyday solution for loose produce, small pharmacy items, and variable-measure retail goods scanned at the point of sale.

From RSS to GS1 DataBar

GS1 DataBar began life under the working name Reduced Space Symbology (RSS), covered elsewhere on this site as a historical/technical entry. GS1 DataBar is not a different code — it is the same underlying symbology family, renamed and formally standardized by GS1 as part of its Application Standards, with a defined set of variants, print specifications, and scanning requirements for retail point-of-sale use. Where the RSS article focuses on the raw bar/space structure, this article focuses on how GS1 DataBar is actually deployed today: encoding GTIN-14 plus supplementary data such as lot number, sell-by date, or variable weight, all within a footprint roughly half the width of a standard UPC/EAN symbol.

The Five Variants

GS1 DataBar is not one symbol but a family, each suited to a different physical constraint:

  • GS1 DataBar Omnidirectional — a single-row linear symbol readable from any angle by omnidirectional scanners, used at retail checkout for loose produce and small items.
  • GS1 DataBar Stacked — the omnidirectional data split across two rows for extremely narrow or tall labels where a single-row symbol will not fit.
  • GS1 DataBar Limited — a narrower variant restricted to GTINs starting with digit 0 or 1, intended for small items scanned only at point of sale, not in general distribution.
  • GS1 DataBar Expanded — encodes GTIN plus one or more additional Application Identifiers (weight, price, batch/lot, expiration date) in a single-row symbol, common on fresh food and coupons.
  • GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked — the Expanded data set wrapped across multiple rows for compact labeling on small variable-measure packages.
Structure and Encoding

All GS1 DataBar variants use a module-based linear structure built from groups of bars and spaces with built-in mathematical checksums rather than a simple check digit, allowing very tight, high-density encoding while remaining linear (one-dimensional) rather than a matrix code. The Expanded variants use segmented, multi-row layouts internally but are still decoded as a single linear message once assembled by the scanner's software. Data is structured strictly around GS1 Application Identifiers — a two-to-four digit prefix (for example, 01 for GTIN, 10 for batch/lot, 15 for best-before date, 3103 for net weight in kilograms) followed by the associated value, exactly as in GS1-128.

Use Cases

GS1 DataBar's core value proposition is fitting complete GS1 identification data onto packaging where a standard EAN-13 or UPC-A symbol would be too wide, or where extra data beyond the product identifier is genuinely needed at checkout:

  • Loose fruit, vegetables, and other variable-measure produce with a price-per-weight relationship.
  • Small pharmacy and cosmetics items with limited label area.
  • Manufacturer and store coupons, where GS1 DataBar Expanded's ability to carry a coupon value and family code drives modern in-lane coupon processing.
  • Retail items requiring batch/lot or expiration data to be captured directly at the register for shrink and freshness management.

Standards and Practical Considerations

GS1 DataBar is maintained under the GS1 General Specifications, the same governing document that covers GS1-128 and GS1 QR Code. Because of its narrow modules and mathematical check structure, it demands good print quality and generally requires scanners with GS1 DataBar decoding enabled — a capability now standard on modern retail POS scanners but historically requiring a firmware update on older laser scanners. Retailers adopting GS1 DataBar for variable-measure or coupon items should confirm their point-of-sale scanning fleet and POS software have both been updated to recognize the symbology and correctly parse its embedded Application Identifiers.
